  • CRJ 200 AFC Sample Questions

    • What heading will the FD maintain when the TOGA switch is pressed on a go-around?

The FD will hold the heading at the time of activation.

    • Explain the take-off mode of the FMA when the aircraft is on the ground?

Pressing the TOGA button will display a green "TO" in the vertical and lateral active mode of the FMA. This is achieved by pressing one of the TOGA switches prior to the take-off roll. The lateral mode will hold the heading at weight off wheels. The vertical mode will set the FD command bars at 15 degrees pitch-up when both engines are running. Pressing the TOGA button will also update the position in the FMS.

    • Explain the difference between a green "CLB 250" and an "IAS 250" in the active FMA on the PFD.

CLB ### is activated by pressing the SPEED button on the FCP once with a pre-selected altitude set that is above the current altitude. If the target airspeed is increased the FCC will direct the FD to pitch down but never lower than 50 feet per minute (fpm) and then climb once the airspeed is achieved.

IAS ### is activated by a second press of the SPEED button, and the aircraft will maintain the selected airspeed even if it means going from a climb to a descent.

    • What heading will the FD maintaine when the TOGA switch is pressed on a go-around?

The FD will hold the heading at the time of activation.

    • What is the default lateral mode of the FD?

      Roll mode.

    • If there is not a lateral mode selected at the time the AP is engaged, what lateral mode will the AP maintain?

If the bank angle is less than 5 degrees, the FD will roll level. If the bank angle is greater than 5 degrees, the FD maintains the bank angle at the time of AP engagement.

    • How can the AP disconnect warning be canceled after the TOGA switch is pressed on a go-around?

Push the TOGA switch again or push the AP disconnect switch on the control wheel.

    • What occurs to the FD lateral mode if the navigation source is lost?

      Reverts to roll mode.

    • How are lateral FD modes selected?

The lateral FD modes are activated or armed by buttons on the FCP or the TOGA switches on the thrust levers.

    • When the localizer captures, what FCP modes will automatically clear if engaged?

It clears the heading mode, half bank, and the turbulence mode.

    • What course must be set when using the back course mode?

The front course must be set.

    • Explain the half bank option of the FD?

This button will restrict the FD bank to 15 degrees. It is automatically selected climbing through 31,600 feet and automatically turned off descending through 31,600 feet.

It is not available during a go-around mode, takeoff mode, on-side localizer or approach capture.

    • How is an active vertical mode disabled?

Select another vertical mode, or re-select the active FCP button.

    • How is a pre-selected altitude armed when set in the altitude alerter?

When a vertical mode is selected like VS or IAS.

    • How is the altitude capturing point of the FD determined?

It is determined by the closure rate. With high vertical speeds the capture point is further from the altitude.

If the vertical speed of the aircraft is only 500 fpm then altitude capturing occurs within about 50 feet of the selected altitude. When the vertical speed is 3,000 fpm then altitude capture can occur even before the 1,000 feet to level off occurs.

    • How is the Altitude Alerting System (ALS) connected to the FD and AP systems?

The ALS is independent of the FD and AP system. It processes information from the air data computers (ADC).
